The Floating Mosque

The Al-Rahmah Mosque, commonly referred to

as the Floating Mosque, was built in 1985 rooted in the floor of the Red Sea. In the decades since this wondrous structure was constructed in

Saudi Arabia

, it has gained international fame for the way it appears to magically float on the water’s surface.

How convincing that illusion is depends heavily on the water levels, admittedly. No matter how high the Red Sea is on a particular day, the alabaster-hued pillars, turquoise dome, and stained glass windows are visually stunning. Fifty-two outer domes encircle the central one, which stands below a towering minaret.
