Lodhi Colony is a neighborhood

located in central Delhi that mostly contains go

vernment housing blocks. But this isn’t a bland stretch of real estate.

In 2015, the St+art India Foundation, an organization dedicated to making art more accessible, partnered with the government to allow street artists to use the state-owned buildings as massive canvases.

As a result, this once-quiet residential neighborhood has now become a vibrant hub of eclectic artwork. Over 50 murals created by local and foreign artists are now housed here. The works cover a wide range of themes, from social issues to nature to re-imagined aspects of Indian culture.

The success of Lodhi Colony has driven a surge in interest in street art across India, as St+art has expanded its efforts to other major cities. By making the murals free to all, this initiative has given Indians of all economic strata the opportunity to engage with and become more involved in art.
